How Blessed: Solanus Casey, OFM Cap.

On Saturday, November 18, 350+ Capuchin Brothers gathered in Ford Field, Detroit, MI, to witness the fruits of the labors of our brother Solanus Casey, OFM Cap., as 71,000 people came together to celebrate this humble man's holy life and example. An example that we are called to live today, as Capuchin's and people of faith from every walk of life. Doing what Solanus did, simple things that have great and lasting impact in lives: listening, consoling, teaching and accompanying.

Friars remember Cap College on the Centenary

CCollCent02     Photos amd videos are in from the Mass and dinner celebration of Cap College's centenary year. The feast on Friday, October 13, was especially intended for friars and former residents of the community. Our brother Andrew Corriente, OFM Cap., outdid himself on the decor and setup of the celebration and Br. Matt Hindelang, OFM Cap., was Master chef in the kitchen. Yet, all the friar residents hosted and worked CapCollegeANNIVhard to make the visitors feel at home again - all in the midst of a busy academic year.

Check out these photos in our Gallery page. An outstanding collection of videos of the event (like the one below) are all available on YouTube. Here's a sample from the opening remarks at dinner, but you can view the homily of our brother Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., as well as reflections of former residents of Cap College as they remember God's goodness and faithfulness over the years in our home in Washington, DC.

Secular Franciscans forge Provincial bonds

OFS 2017 01

The Secular Franciscans (OFS) who are affilliated with the Capuchins friars of our Province of St. Augustine gathered for the first time since the Regionalization of the OFS family. The meeting was held on Saturday, September 30, in New Baltimore, PA, where 42 were in attendance at the meeting - 16 friarsand 26 OFS Ministers, officers and members.

On of the Secular Franciscans in attendance, had worked at the ground level of the Regionalization process in the 1990s, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be together across geographic regions.  Many felt it a blessing to gather with friends made before the unification by geographic regions and appreciated the care and sensitivity shown by the Province in taking the time to field questions anf thoughts of the Seculars. All of the participants heard the commitment to provide Spiritual Assisitance reinforced and felt the Province's particular concern for strengthening the bonds of our common charism.

Capuchin College: 100 Years to Celebrate

CapCollege LOGO     In early September, friars and friends of our friary, "Capuchin College" (St. Francis Friary),  kicked-off  the celebration of the Centenary - it's been 100 years since the building and dedication of the house where friars throughout this "century" of years have lived and studied. The house was, and still is, dedicated to the formation of friars who have completed their novitiate year. That's the year when men don the Capuchin habit and discern their decision to take their first vows in our Capuchin way of live. Capuchin College is the next destination, where the friars live, study and minister, pursuing professional studies for their lives as friars. Many of them are students of the Theology faculty at Catholic University of America, and various friars live and work there as a support to fraternal life in preparation for priestly ministry.

Through September and October, a number of events are taking place to celebrate and remember . . .

Puerto Rico: Calm before the Storm

PR MeetingHurr 07    From September 11-15, our Provincial Minister Tom Betz, OFM Cap., took part in the annual friars assembly/retreat in the Custody of St. John the Baptist in Puerto Rico. The joyful and fraternal mood of the friars never envisioned the chaos and destruction which would ensue only a week later. The gathering was held at Casa Cristo Redentor in Aguas Buenas, PR. The photos below shoe the friars in their annual gathering, called to gather the friars in prayer and fellowship from across the Commonwealth. They also reveal, however, some photos from the first moments after Hurrican Maria devastated the island.
